Can’t believe we’re half way through the year. It’s flown by…even though I (sadly) haven’t done that much flying. Luckily, the summer has a lot of travel coming up: Austin this month, Denver/South Dakota the next, and Nashville in August. Meanwhile, I’ve been socking away points and waiting for the time to travel!
As always, you can check out my cumulative points at the Keeping Score page on the top banner.
Running out of Rapid Rewards
I published a post Saturday on transferring Ultimate Rewards over to Rapid Rewards. Kind of a necessity if I want to keep using my Companion Pass this year! Luckily, we already have all of our travel booked.
I’ve burned over 225,000 Rapid Rewards between my account, my girlfriend’s, and my son’s. I like to think we got a lot of value out of that, and I’ve enjoyed Southwest. That being said, I’m really looking forward to flying other airlines and going to new destinations in the coming years!
Hilton for Her
Taking advantage of the recent increased sign up bonuses on the American Express Hilton cards, my girlfriend applied and was approved for the American Express Hilton Surpass. At 100,000 Hilton points after spending $3,000 within 90 days, a free weekend night after your cardmember anniversary, and 6x points on gas, and groceries, how could we say no? I’m excited to have some more hotel points in our pocket, even if Hilton isn’t particularly valuable.
I’m thinking I’ll pair that free night with the Citi Hilton card’s free nights before they shut the cards down. Maybe even one for her too! I like the sound of five free nights at the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh, or perhaps the Trianon Palace Versailles.
Visually, the Merrill+ Visa Signature is probably my favorite card. It just looks sleek!
I have to remind myself that the points are the important part, not the suave blue card – and I just met my minimum spend bonus. 50,000 Merrill+ points can get me two $500 tickets (25,000 points per ticket), whether they’re one-way, roundtrip, business, economy, whatever. Looking forward to spending these when I find a good cash deal. Plus, the card doesn’t even have an annual fee! So I can hold onto this one until I find the right flights to redeem on, no pressure! I’m thinking maybe IcelandAir to Europe next year? After all, I’ll need to get to that Waldorf in Scotland…
Doubling Down on Membership Rewards
I recently added a close friend to my American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card as an authorized user. I’ve known him since I was 5, and it’s worked out great! He’s not interested in credit card churning (yet), and was looking to build credit. I thought, “Why not jump on one of my cards and just pay me back each month?”
I’m happy to say this experiment is working out quite well. He’s getting experience with credit cards and building credit, I’m getting some extra points, and (most importantly) we still get along! Sweetening the deal, almost all of his spending is gas, groceries, and restaurants – all double bonus categories for the AmEx PRG!
