Make Sure Your IHG Points Don’t Expire!

InterContinental Hotels Group includes Holiday Inn, InterContinental (obviously), Hotel Indigo, the Candlewood Suites, and quite a few other brands.  With their worldwide network and range of brands, I like having a pile of IHG points in my portfolio.  Of course, I earned all of these with the IHG Priceless Surprises Promotion earlier this year.  I filled out 94 notecards for my girlfriend, and 94 for me, and we raked in a total of 102,000 IHG points between the two accounts!  Although I suffered a bit of a writing cramp, the time was well worth it to have all those points!

Now, we haven’t actually stayed at IHG all that often since then.  While in Chicago, I did book a Holiday Inn through my account, which kept my points active.  On the GF’s account?  I got an email from AwardWallet the other day, her points will expire in February 2017.

We have plenty of time before they expire, but I thought I’d cross it off my To Do List early, and write up a little post for you on this cold Sunday evening.

I mean, I don’t have anything better to do…

I’ll start by saying this is really, really easy.  All you need to do is book a hotel room with points.  Then cancel it.

That’s it.  No catch, cross my fingers.

Step 1 – Book Your Reward Night

Navigate to “My Account,” and check your expiration date.  If it’s coming up soon, let’s continue on with the rest of these steps.  Remember, you never want your points to expire, especially when you can keep them active for free, and with only 2 minutes on the computer!

Her points were set to expire on February 25th, 2017.  We still have a few months to go, but let’s go ahead and reset that timer right now!

Book a room with points.  Make sure you click “Rewards Nights” for your rate preference.  Remember, you’ll have to actually have enough points to book the room for at least a night, even though you’re going to cancel it right after.

Boston was a little expensive, but Braintree is nearby, and only 20,000 points? Looks good to me!

Step 2 – Cancel That Reward Night

Next, we have to cancel that room.  I mean, if you actually wanted to use those points for the room, that will reset the clock too.  Since I don’t plan on staying in Braintree on the night of March 8th, I’m going to cancel the reservation and call it a night.

From “My Account,” click on “Upcoming Reservations” over on the left hand side of the screen.  Find the booking you want to cancel, then click “Cancel Reservation.”

IHG will give you that little disclaimer about cancellation penalties, but for our purpose, it doesn’t matter.  As long as you booked on points, there shouldn’t be any cancellation issues.  Be sure to read and double check, but you should be in good shape!

The points used are returned to your account immediately!  You’ll also receive an email, confirming your cancellation.  I got my points back , your expiration date reset, for one year from today!

Step 3 – Get back to the rest of your life!

A quick, easy way to keep those IHG points from expiring.  Just complete all these steps, and move right along with the rest of your weekend
